What Colour?

I thought I'd paint the laundry/side door in a fun colour - My immediate thought was bright yellow but the more I've thought about it the more indecisive I've became.  Now I'm thinking I might do the front door as well.  It used to be a gorgeous deep state blue but it being a west facing door it got so hot in summer that the paint would bubble.  A glossy black would be great but I think I need to steer clear of the dark colours for that reason.
I need some suggestions..... for the front door and the side door.....

 

 

 

 

House Update

Today was the first time I have been to the house and got that delicious thrill of anticipation - I was able to picture the house with the furniture in it and I got very, very excited.  Surfer Boy has finished both sets of steel doors (because he is bloody brilliant) and coupled with the weatherboards going on it is actually all starting to come together.

My Steel Doors

 

Surfer boy enlisted the help of one of his many talented friends and spent Sunday installing one set of our steel doors - apparently this was a fairly epic task but by lunch time the frame was in place, level, and S.B. was looking pleased.  

The idea was to leave the doors off for the time being but unable to leave a task unfinished (unlike most tradies) S.B. went ahead and installed the doors as well. God knows how he did it as I tried to help him lift one and gave up - they weigh an absolute tonne!

(I'm tipping the icepack he had on his back all last night can be traced back to a certain set of steel doors)

 

So the small set is in - now for the big ones!

The Small Things

I'm not sure why, but this door gives me pleasure on a daily basis.  It is the door to our outside toilet at CHALK and I absolutely love it.

Our Doors

I'm very excited because our steel doors were delivered to the house yesterday.  We had originally been quoted a 6 month lead time by a couple of companies but the guys we went with have managed to make them in 6 weeks which is fantastic - but where the hell are we supposed to put them?  At the moment they are stashed in the only part of the house that still has walls and a roof and I am assuming they are what we ordered!  I think I'd better pop down there tonight and check under the bubble wrap.

Steel Design

The steel doors are ordered!  This was the first design decision we made way back when we did our first architectural drawings.  This is basically the profile although we are keeping them galvanised (dirty silver) rather than powder coating them.  I felt the black was too heavy with our weatherboards.

One set of doors will also have a row of windows on either side effectively making the area double the size.  We did toss up as to whether these were an extravagance but I am so happy we have decided to stick with them. 

The Humble Side Door

 

This underrated item has become my very first big decision for the new house.  I sat done with our lovely builder Karen yesterday for a couple of hours and went through the plans in detail to work out a schedule of when I have to have decisions made.  I now feel very much in control and being a list lover I am overjoyed at the  typed up timeframe I have made for myself. 

While I was there I actually made a few decisions, the first of which was the side door.  I must admit I hadn't previously given it a lot of thought so I hope it's ok.  This door leads off our laundry to our side path not unlike this one...

In fact the door I have decided on is pretty similar to the one pictured too.  While I was on a roll I also chose the laundry and toilet doors - now for the handles.  Seriously!  So much to decide.  Fun though.

Steel My Heart

A friend sent me this image knowing, quite rightly, that I would love it.  The industrial doors for our renovation have been designed and quoted so as soon as we get the go ahead from the builders they will go in to production.  They are not quite as large as these!  Doors are similar but without all the windows above.

Steel Challenge Complete.

One design feature of our extension that we have been definite about since day one is our doors and windows in the living / kitchen / dining area.  The doors onto our deck will be industrial factory doors (double) with windows on either side. Kind of like these but with smaller panes.  The idea is that they will help link our traditional weatherboard house to our industrial and rustic interior decorating style.

We've decided not to powder coat the frames but to leave it as galvanised steel giving us a dirty silver finish, not as hard as the black.

 

Our problem has been the sourcing of these doors.  I originally found a company in Sydney but my mission this week was to try to find someone to make them a little closer to home to keep costs down.

Finally yesterday, after literally hours of Google searching I found a company that will custom make then exactly as we want and they are only a few suburbs away. I can't tell you how excited I was.  I have since found another company close to home and am feeling very pleased with myself for completing this week's challenge.

Now to get a quote!  Not so excited about this part - fingers crossed we don't have to sell a kidney.

Front Door

I find doors fascinating. Whenever I pass an interesting door I am dying to see what treasures and delights lie within. I would love to be brave enough to have an outrageous front door but I fear I may never have the courage.
