Call Me Maybe

You know those songs that come along and on first hearing you are hooked!  Well this is one of those for me.  I've heard it once on the radio and I fell head over heels in love with it.  It makes me grin, it makes me dance, it makes me turn it up loud!  It may be a completely cheesy pop song but hey, what's wrong with that?  Thanks Carly Rae for making me smile.

Sally Boyden

When ever I watch Rockwiz I am reminded of the first album I ever bought - The Littlest Australian (1976) - perhaps not the coolest album but I absolutely adored it.  It opened up and had pictures of Sally that I can still remember clearly to this day.  It's track listing included such gems as 'I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing' and 'Tan Shoes & Pink Shoelaces'.   At the age of 8 I thought Sally Boyden, at 10, was everything I aspired to be.....
Here's a peak at Sally on Young Talent Time in 1975.  (aged 9)

At 45 Sally is still writing and performing and although we may not have heard much from her that does not mean she hasn't been busy - .
After leaving Y.T.T. in 1976, Sally acted in a number of American productions including ‘Lassie’, ‘Barnaby and Me’ and ‘The Waltons’, as well as the Australian series 'Come Midnight Monday'.
She then moved to London to work as a songwriter for EMI, writing songs for Leo Sayer, David Cassidy and Shakin' Stevens and  has sung backing vocals for Duran Duran.
She has held long-standing residencies at the esteemed London music venues, Twelve Bar Club, Ground Floor, Acoustic CafĂ© and South Bar, showcasing Sally’s band ‘The Candy Bombers’.
Sally has joined Duran Duran on stage at Wembley, Earls Court and in Boston and has recorded vocals for Duran Duran’s ‘Pop Trash’, ‘Astronaut’, ‘Massacre on the Red Carpet’, and the latest album ‘All You Need is Now’. Sally’s vocals can also be heard on the Dandy Warhols’ album ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’, and the Stephen Duffy, Nick Rhodes project, ‘The Devils’.

Currently, due to overwhelming response from her recent appearances on the ‘Young Talent Time’ reunion shows Sally has released an album of her own songs, ‘Keepsake - Chapter 1’
Not bad for a child star who looked at one point like she might be headed down the wrong path.  Best I drag out the record player and grab my hairbrush....

Heart Sing

A couple of weeks ago I took Surfer Boy on a secret date to see Michelle Shocked at the East Brunswick Club.  Michelle is the first artist we ever saw together in the first couple of months of our relationship and she is the soundtrack to those early years.  15 odd years later and I bought tickets but refused to tell him where we were going until we were lined up outside the venue.  It was a huge success and a truely memorable gig as all Michelle's gigs are.

Fast forward a week or two and following Michelle's advice, I added her as a friend on Facebook and yesterday I actually received a reply!!!

Michelle Shocked

Hi Jenny

I share the privilege. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! Love, Michelle

How fabulous is that.  I can't tell you how it made my day.  She is a music industry icon and I'm so thrilled she took the time to write to me.

Don't Look Back

One of my favourite bands has released their latest film clip and it's as gorgeous as all their others.  She & Him always make me smile and my hips involuntarily sway when ever I hear them.  Enjoy.

RIP James Freud

What a hideous week it has been - losing two legends within days of each other.  The news has just come through that James Freud, lead singer of the Models, was found dead at home this morning.  Last week The Models were inducted into the ARIAs Hall of Fame and only days later we lose this Australian rock legend.
My sympathy goes out to his wife and two boys who have struggled alongside him through addictions and re-hab only to lose him at the end.

Miami Horror

The Australian band reminding me what the soundtrack to year 9 sounded like! You'd almost believe it was 1983 not 2008.
(Thanks for the heads up Lizey)

Horchata

For those of us in Australia who own and love Vampire Weekend's new album 'Contra', here is the answer to a question I have been asking myself - and you may have too...

What on earth is Horchata?

Mexican Horchata
A refreshing cold drink made of rice, almonds, cinnamon (canella), lime zest and sugar. This drink is rumored to be a cure for a hangover and is frequently served at breakfast time. Even though the drink has a milky appearance it is completely dairy-free.

So there you go - never say you don't learn anything at CHALK & TALK! Apparently Horchata is commonly served with massive long donut thingys called Fartuos - it's sounding better and better.

Australian Record Industry Awards

God I love the ARIAs -

*How many beers do you reckon Daniel Johns consumed before Silverchairs Album Of The Year award??

*How hot were John Butler and Keith Urban together?

*Is Nick Cave finally loosing his mane?

*Did anyone else tear up when Missy sang?

*Can anyone do rock star better than Daniel Johns?

*Is Megan Gale taller than Rove McManus?

*Is there anyone else who doesn't get the Sneaky Sound System phenomenon?

*Sarah Blasko - best pop release??

All questions I could ask for this weeks poll.....

This is for Eliza -

This is for me -

And this is just 'cause she's ACE -
